Sceaftesige re-creates a time when Englishmen, Norsemen and Normans inhabited this part of the country. Members
portray a range of these cultural groups and are encouraged to choose an authentic name that would have been common
in the period.
Members are allocated a rank – a title which would have been common in Anglo-Saxon society. Dependent
on their time and involvement in the group, members can become a
, a Ceorl (or
freeman, divided into
there are the theows, or
, the newcomers
to the society and those who have incurred the displeasure of the group leader.
Many members have chosen to adopt a trade, a non-military skill which can be displayed at the Living History
Exhibits, whilst others concentrate solely on their life as a warrior within the Fyrd – the army of Sceaftesige.
